Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the College’s Annual Awards ceremony could not take place in its usual format of a glittering evening with a guest of honour to present prizes. Instead, the special event was moved online - taking over all the College’s social media channels for the first time.

During the day, starting at 9.30 am our Principal and CEO Dr Sam Parrett OBE gave a video introduction on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and so began an exciting day of video citations and prize giving.

Altogether, there were 18 awards made in eight categories including Adult, HE, FE, Apprentice, Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, ESOL and Work Experience Students of the Year. There was also a prize for Outstanding Contribution to the Community.

Dr Sam Parrett told the virtual audience in her opening address: “I am so disappointed to not be standing with you on stage this year celebrating your success. It has been an unbelievable year in which many things have changed and we have had to learn new ways of doing things until we eventually return to normal. These have included online learning and tutorials, virtual open events, 360 degree 3d campus tours, and now this - a virtual online student award ceremony.

“We know this will never replace us all being together in person and we simply cannot wait to return to our familiar format. This year, above all, I have been so impressed with how so many students have responded to and adapted admirably to online and remote learning and it has been so uplifting to see them taking complete responsibility for their learning, staying motivated throughout and committed to succeeding.

“Your time at College is such an important time in your life and so the sudden lockdown in late March came as a huge surprise, bringing with it the potential to cause mass disruption. However, due to the commitment of your tutors and your own self-study skills, adaptability, resilience and learning quickly how to deal with adversity, you have all come through and deserve the maximum credit for doing so.

“I would like to send a huge congratulations to you all - please keep striving for success and be reassured that your future is extremely bright.”
